Spector Says Critics "Misunderstand" Epic Mickey
Epic Mickey mastermind Warren Spector says the biz is faring sol ailing with reviewers because they just don't understand what it is they're playing.
So, Verse form Mickey. It really hasn't lived up to the pre-release hype. It scored a wan 3/5 stars hither at The Dreamer and a comparably seedy 60 at Eurogamer and GameSpot; many reviewers praised the cleverness of the conception but took it to labor for the decidedly sub-par gameplay. But in an interview for MTV's Clutch blog, reprinted in full at The Examiner, Spector, the drive behind the game, said the real trouble is that reviewers just don't get it.
"In that location has never been a game, e'er, where if you give it to me for 30 seconds, I hind end't crack it. I mean, I will break a camera in any game always ready-made," he said in response to criticism nearly the game's camera view. "Tertiary person camera is direction harder than I even imagined it could be. It is the hardest problem in videogame development I now believe. And then IT is a hard problem, everybody gets it wrong, it's a question of how close to right practice you catch on."
"Second, cameras are different in different game styles," helium continuing. "So in a platform game, you want the tv camera up higher in a steeper tip over, because the important thing for the platform player is to be competent to see the next jump clearly, to go steady the gap. In an action jeopardize gamy, like a Zelda e.g., you want the camera down lower so you birth to a greater extent tactical cognisance because in that respect are enemies out there… Indeed platformers and action adventure games have several camera requirements."
The problem, he explained, is that Epic Mickey is an "action adventure office-playacting" stake, yet everyone including members of his own team insists on judgment information technology as a platformer. Spector said the comparisons with Super Mario Galaxy 2 are "driving him enamored" because, as a dedicated platformer, it's by nature going to be better at information technology and have a better platform-fashio photographic camera.
"I wish attend my grave, imperfect American Samoa it is, proud as snake pit of my television camera team," he said. "And if reviewers want to give United States of America a hard prison term active it because they're misunderstanding the game we ready-made, it's not for me to recite them that they're wrong, dead not. But I wish people would get it out of their question that we made a Mario competitor, because we didn't."
I have unbounded respect for Rabbit warren Spector – you could substitute his dev credits with a "Top Ten Best Videogames of Complete Time" list and nobody would bat an oculus – simply in this case I have to disagree with his assessment. If a declamatory number of experienced reviewers are someways "doing information technology reprehensible," that speaks to a fault in the game, non in the understanding of the role player. Misunderstanding a tricky mechanic or arcane rule is one thing, but "misunderstanding the game we made" just doesn't hold water.
